Litchfield National Park

The last three posts have been added in one day. Check the archives if you missed them.

Questions from Figtree students.

The Cathederal termite mounds can grow to 7.5 metres high.
The magnetic termite mounds are slightly smaller.
They are massive.

Wildlife to date:
A variety of Wallabies and kangaroos.
dingoes, geckos, tar tar lizards ( these are cool, they always wave tar tar as they speed off.)
Fresh water crocodiles and salt water crocodiles, camels, wedge tail eagles, kites ( Small eagles)
orb spider, fruit bats, feral cats, brumbies, wild goats and sheep, wild donkeys, dolphins, a  lemon shark, many fish, a few snakes, stray cattle and many insects, too many to name, we have been bitten by many of them.

We have not even looked like getting home sick, there are toooo many places to see & things to do.At present we find ourselves in Darwin, many things to do for families.

Fish to date: King George Whiting, leatherjacket, brim, whiting, squid, sooty grunters or black bream, dhufish, bluebone (Baldchin Groper), Australian Slamon, Blue tipped salmon, queen fish, Mud crabs, blue swimmer crabs,  sand crabs, trevally, golden eyed trevally, gharfish, Tommy Ruff.

We check out wildlife as we travel, Harry had a drive of the car, inside a cattle station, he did a good job, Pictures on a previous blog. On long trips we catch up with our school work, ipods and laptops come in handy. We have a selection of many movies to watch as well. Mum and Dad always provide quality singing, however their songs are really old ones.
Dad is trying to convince us that ACDC is a really cool band.

The best playground duty Mr Wheeler.
There is a suburb named in honour of Ms Wannell,
 it's called WINNELLIE, I'll send a photo.

The next leg takes us from Katherine to Litchfield National Park ( 2 night stay) and on to Howard Springs, on the outskirts of Darwin.
This is what greeted us in the morning when travelling with the Vitelli's.

"Are the Lloyd's still on tour?"proclaimed young Angus.

Angus has become quite the character.
His parents have confirmed, he has been quite the character for some time now.

Wangi Falls in the Litchfield National Park. We camped here for 2 nights.

This spot has been open for two weeks after it was given the all clear on the croc front.

Spearing fish, the cultural tours are having a profound effect.

The falls are surrounded by a Monsoon Rainforest. The fruit bats love to hang around here, they are extremely noisy and they love to poop everywhere.

Around the waterholes, a lovely green foliage occurs.
Five metres from the river and the vegetation becomes very dry.

The Lost city is made up of a soft sandstone with a hard silica covering.
These formations do resemble a crumbling city.

A mere 10km 4WD trek through the bush and ..............

a bus stop......

Green ants fold the leaves and join them together to make their nests. They are quite aggresive and apparently taste quite...... a citrus taste is best to describe them.

Florence Falls, these are my favourite falls to date.

A dried up Green Ant nest.

The termite nests come in two distinct shapes - The Cathederal nest below and the magnetic termite nest wheich run North - South to minimise the exposure to the sun.
Off to Darwin.

Hi Harry & Jackson, it's Steven & Andrew. The waterfall looks nice. The termite nests looked really weird. Have fun in Darwin. We didn't get to go that far up on our trip. Hope to see your photos soon.
